Read the essay “Disability and Spoiled Identity”. What is your understanding of the concept of spoiled identity as it refers to disability? B. Based on your current knowledge of disability, do you believe that some or all aspects of spoiled identity are inevitable or can society make changes to insure that spoiled identity is eliminated? How is this article related to the decision of the state of Arkansas to put two inmates to death who have been diagnosed as mentally ill? What are the culture attitudes that are reflected in this article? D. Read the articled titled: Online abuse of disabled people is getting worse--when will it be taken seriously? and consider the following, then answer the questions: Ridicule and harassment of disabled persons is an age old fact and one that seems to be global in nature. Social media has added another dimension, another venue for expressing hurtful, damaging comments. The Supreme Court ruled that pornography cannot be censored as this is an abridgment of freedom of speech, a basic right of a true democracy. The ruling has opened the door to an "everything goes" mentality. Questions: A. How can there be a reduction of ridicule of disabled persons on social media? B. Do you agree with Britain's dilemma of determining where one draws the line between ridicule, harassment and "simply" unpleasant comments? C. In your opinion, is censorship of any kind warranted? E. Search for an article, preferably a research study, that is focused on one aspect or aspects of adjustment to disability including the consequences on family dynamics and interpersonal relationships. Summarize the article (no cut and paste, please) and generate a question for your colleagues based on your findings. (Include the citation).

A. I think that the concept of spoiled identity as it refers to disability implies the level of negativity developed in the mind of every individual with disability because of considering his/her physical and/or mental condition to not be stable/sound like every individual without disability. The lack of all parts of a normal human body or mental ability of a normal human brain can made individuals with disabilities detest them for other individuals looking at the individuals with disabilities with sympathy. The oppression and humiliation faced in socializing can also be reasons for individuals with disabilities to never like them. B. I think that some aspects of spoiled identity are inevitable and society can make changes like changing the way the societal members look upon individuals with disabilities.
